A very successful and enjoyable over 60s tournament was hosted by Wigan Walkers down at the PowerLeague Soccerdome in Wigan last Thursday.
There were 9 excellent teams in attendance, with the games being played in a competitive yet friendly manner.
Competitors:
Blackburn
Crosby
Manchester Corinthians
Northgate
Preston North End
Sheffield
Wigan Blues
Wigan Whites
Wigan Yellows
The tournament was run on a league basis with each side playing each other once, the top four then going through to a semi-final, 1st v 4th, 2nd v 3rd, with the winners of these games competing in the final.
The first semi final saw league leaders Sheffield defeat 4th placed Preston 3-0 and sweep into the final.
The second semi final was a tight affair between 2nd place Blackburn and 3rd placed Wigan Whites, the match ended in a goalless draw and went to a shoot out, Wigan Whites coming out on top with 2 penalties to nil.
The final was a cagey affair, Sheffield and Wigan Whites having drawn 0-0 in the group stage and being the only two sides that had remained undefeated it was no surprise that another goalless draw would ensue.
So the final was settled by the dreaded penalty shoot out with the tension going right down to the final spot kick, Wigan Whites taking to honours and winning by 3 pens to 2.
Congratulations to Wigan Whites, worthy winners and also to all those involved in organising, Martin Murphy, Rob Williams, Steve Halliwell, the referees, Paul Carr and also Wigan Athletic Community Trust for supporting and providing the trophies.
