When Wigan Walkers FC secretary Steve Halliwell, prior to the Festival of Aging Walking Football Exhibition tournament, declared that “it’s coming home” the certainty with which he uttered those immortal words was borne out to be prophetic.

The winners trophy was indeed coming home after Wigan Walkers Whites blew away all in front of them.

The fact that the five teams entered into the competition were all from the Wigan Walkers club shows that Steve knows how to back a winner.

The tournament was held at the DW Stadium in Wigan, a playing cage provided by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, was erected on the players carpark and at high noon on a blistering hot Thursday the teams commenced battle.

With only two goalkeepers available, Dave Malone and Ralph Twiss, the pair demonstrated their extreme athleticism and complete dedication to their art by playing in every single game, massive credit and appreciation to both.

The teams for the day:

Wigan Whites

Wigan Yellows

Wigan Latics

Wigan Bibs (orange)

Wigan Bibs (orange)

As you can see from the list above there was a colour clash, we only brought orange bibs and this did lead to confusion, which was quite comical, one player, no names Tony McKenna, played for both bibbed teams and actually competed in three games on the trot, oh we did laugh, though Tony was a little perplexed he did see the funny side, I think?

Whites were strong throughout the tournament, the team of Gary Wilkins, George Walker, Billy Rotherham and Joe McKeever proving formidable opposition and taking the title without losing a game, great performance.

Tournament Golden Boot went to Gary Wilkins with a shedful

A superb tournament, played in the right spirit and a much enjoyable day, thanks to all the players, family members, Di Twiss for the photographs, Wigan Athletic Community Trust for their continued partnership, Festival of Aging and all the partners, Wigan Council and most of all the suppliers of the FREE pies, lovely.
