On a soaring hot summer’s day Wigan Walkers Whites turned in a superb performance to win the St Helens Festival walking football tournament.
The teams in this inaugural competition were Wigan Walkers FC Whites, Wigan Walkers FC Yellows, St Helens 1, St Helens 2, Southport and Warrington.
The tournament was played in a ‘league’ format, the Whites won all 5 games without conceding a goal.
Wigan Walkers Whites 2 Southport 0
Despite Gary Wilkins missing a spot kick the Whites came through their first game with goals from Wilkins and Alan Southern.

Despite the headline looking like a TEN one win for St Helens it was actually a 1-0 win for the Whites with that man Gary Wilkins on the score sheet once again, despite the close scoreline it was fairly comfortable and 1-0 flattered the Saints first team.

Next up for the Whites was a derby clash against their good mates Wigan Walkers FC Yellows and they proved very difficult opponents. Chances were created at both ends with Ralph Twiss in the Yellows goal making several superb saves, but ultimately the game was settled by a goal from that man Gary Wilkins and the terrace anthem “Gary Wilkins is on fire, your defence is terrified” rang out around St Helens.
Wigan Walkers Whites 3 St Helens 2 0
Again a confusing headline but it was a three goal to nil win for the Whites, yes Wilkins once again on the score sheet, this time with two, cue music, though he was aided and abetted by wily midfield man Tony Turner who banged home the other goal.
Wigan Walkers Whites 1 Warrington 0
Going into the final game against Warrington a draw would have been enough to give the Whites the title, but in true Wigan style the game was taken to Warrington, their keeper pulled off three great saves but the Whites deservedly took the lead when Tony Turner finished off a superb passing move.
The only surprise in the game was Wilkins not getting on the scoresheet, though it was mentioned that by this stage he was blowing out of his arse!
An excellent all round team performance in the St Helens Festival tournament saw Wigan Walkers FC pick up another trophy and it’s a big one!
