Wigan Walkers FC Weston Super Mare FC
In the music scene The Traveling Wilburys gained a reputation for taking themselves on the road and playing venues around the country to spread their music to the masses, well the walking football equivalent of the Wilburys are Weston Super Mare Walkers, they like nothing better than a tour and found themselves on ‘our patch’ on Thursday afternoon.
Of course we obliged with the request for a game and Steve Halliwell brings us his report of proceedings:
A sporting if one sided contest played over forty minutes and played in the correct manner with Ralph Twiss’ excellent refereeing letting the game flow as much as possible.
The game finished 8-1 in our (WWFC) favour, though Wigan keeper Dave Malone made several saves at crucial times and was gutted as “The Seagulls” hammered a consolation goal just on full-time.
John Eden excelled at the back along with Dave Fletcher who supplied sublime balls to myself and Paul to grab the goals early doors.
Dave Budd, Billy Rotherham, & Jimmy Moss all had a huge influence as well and contributed to an impressive performance by the home outfit.
Our guests all thought we had a great base at The Soccerdome and they clearly enjoyed the match but not the result and were impressed by our footballing standard, “good passing team with a top class keeper.”
Weston Super Mare tired considerably towards the end, this was their SECOND contest of the day after already playing four games at Manchester City’s facility in the morning.
Chip butties were sorted at the end of the game.
The day ended with a tour of the DW Stadium for the Seagulls, they are now heading up to the North East to play games up there, a nice set of lads who thanked us all for our hospitality and they are looking forward to coming back on a regular basis.
A nice gesture by Weston Super Mare presenting us with a pennant.
