Next port of call for the Euro happy band was Malaga to meet up with a former players John Wright and Billy Rotherham.

The Malaga Six & John

The weather changed to a more British climate to greet the squad and in a tournament which can only improve organisational wise, we started off well v the hosts with Wilkins putting us ahead early on and Big Vern pulling off a string of fine saves.

Then the ref took over and awarded a farcical penalty and  failed to stop play when Larry Lloyd lied on the ball in the centre circle, they carried on and scored the winner.

Next up was a hard fought game against Johns new team mates (Wrighty missed this one through injury),we restricted them to one chance and Daintry scored a fine winner.

Last game was against the hosts 2nd team, and we totally dominated this game with goals from Wilkins(2) and Carmichael helping us to a 3 goal win.

We played some good football overall on a big pitch for 7-a-side, it was 3 touch as well so I thought our lads did well at that format seeing as we’re not used to it.

The hosts team is and managed by ex Arsenal and Luton player Martin Hayes, for an ex 1st division player he didn’t stand out or look much better than us to be honest.

They also had a couple of under 40’s players in their side !

The trip was mainly about having a laughter though, and it was good to visit Billy Rotherham at his place in Benaldemena and having a couple of bevies at his local.

Three of us went to watch a Malaga game on the Tuesday night, and we went to the Alhambra Palace in Granada on the Thursday(some else can tell that tale!), however what whet on in the Palace stays in the Palace, so it wasn’t just beer, wine and football!

Here’s to the next trip!
