The Walkers pulled off a terrific performance to fight back from a 3 goal deficit to draw 3-3 and beat Blackburn Rovers on penalties!

Rovers started the game stronger and pushed forward from the off, but were restricted to several long shots only one of which found the target and was comfortably saved.

Wigan had a couple of shots which then went wide of the target.

Blackburn eventually went ahead after 15 minutes, with an excellent finish and then doubled their lead just before the half time break.

Wigan came back at them for a short spell and then slightly against the run of play Blackburn capitalised on an error and went 3-0 up just before the half hour mark.

The final 10 minute period began with Wigan pressing to get back into the game when Terry O’Keeffe scored with a tremendous curling effort.

Just a consolation effort?

No chance, they continued to press forward and O,Keeffe scored again with a low effort into the corner which the keeper appeared to have covered but it found its way past him.

The comeback was well and truly on, Blackburn almost scored but then the ball was back at the other end and Wigan were awarded a free kick for a foul on the edge of the box.

It was ordered to be retaken as Blackburns defenders encroached within the 3 metre rule, the ball was then passed to Tony Turner who absolutely hammered an unstoppable shot into the top of the Blackburn net, 3-3!

5 minutes of extra time saw both sides go close with O’Keeffe’s shot crashing back off the bar and back into play, McKeevers follow up effort going wide.

So onto penalties, Wigan went first and scored their 3 attempts through Halliwell,O’Keeffe and Turner, Blackburn scored two and their 3rd was struck well but Malone flung himself at the ball and diverted it up and over the bar to send the hosts through into the next stage,a fantastic save and a fitting climax to a tremendous comeback!

Well done lads!
