Our Over 60’s traveled over to the site of Bolton Wanderers old ground Burnden Park to play a North West derby against “Third Space Bolton” in The Walking Football Association’s National tournament Round 1 Over Sixties category.
20 minutes each way on an overcast morning began with Tony Turner coming close very early on hitting the base of the post with the keeper well beaten.
“The Whites” were in fine form knocking the ball about quickly and accurately but time & time again the Third Space goalie was in outstanding form saving all our attacking forays.
Half time arrived in what was a competitive match played in a good spirit with the scoreline goal-less, Dave Malone in our goal only having one troublesome save to make.
The second half continued in the same vein but against the run of play the home side took the lead after 25 minutes. The ball taking a “funny” trajectory off the splintered side boards on the right hand side to put Third Space forward in the clear and to be fair to their scorer he scored with aplomb giving Dave no chance to save.
On the half hour mark we equalised when a low shot from Tony (I think) was partly saved by the keeper but it bounced off the post hit the back of his hand and graciously spun into the net for a very deserved leveler.
As per the first half the opposing net-minder was keeping them in the game but we got caught on the break, a thundering shot arrowed towards the top corner when Dave the cat Malone tipped it onto the bar and over.
As the clock counted down towards penalties Steve wormed a shooting position cutting in from the right and guided the ball into the left hand corner for the winning goal and into the draw for Round 2.
Special mention’s for the resolute defence with Tommy Ryan, Terry O’Keeffe and John Anderson rolling back the years with assured performances, so P1 W1 F2 A1 for the new over 60’s manager Tony Turner.
